Staedtler Pencils Made From Upcycled Wood Given Green Test Mark

StaedtlerMade from Upcycled Wood coloured pencils and pencils have been tested by TÜV Rheinland and given the Green Product label, a testament to their environmental friendliness and energy efficiency.

For certification with the Green Product label, TÜV Rheinland, one of the world’s leading testing providers, examines the entire life cycle of a product: from social standards in production to product safety and durability, right through to whether it can be recycled. The test mark is therefore one of the most demanding of its kind in the world.

“We are proud that our pencils and coloured pencils Made from Upcycled Wood are successively being certified with the Green Product Label of TÜV Rheinland for their top performance in the area of environmental friendliness and energy efficiency,” says Britta Ender, head of group communications and brand. “Sustainability is not an empty promise at Staedtler, but a lived commitment. We continuously invest in optimising our manufacturing processes and products.”

The Green Product label was expanded by TÜV Rheinland in 2023 to include writing instruments. The Made from Upcycled Wood pencils and coloured pencils are the first writing instruments to be certified with the new certification.

With the WOPEX technology (Wood Pencil Extrusion) developed in-house, Staedtler manufactures the Made from Upcycled Wood pencils from wood chips, which are produced as a waste product from sawing and planing processes in the wood industry. This wood comes from PEFC-certified, predominantly German forests. The wood chips are ground into wood flour and formed into granules into an endless pencil, which is cut into individual pencils. Thanks to their quality and breakage resistance, Made from Upcycled Wood pencils are particularly durable.
